Book excerpt: There are complex interrelationships between trade, aid and development, and with the move to a greater integration of economies throughout the world, trade has become a vital factor in the economic, social and political development of Third World nations. Trade, Aid and Global Interdependence presents a concise analysis of this vast topic. Trade is introduced as a concept and as an activity; aid and global interdependence are then described in the context of trade in practice. This discussion of the world's shifting patterns of trade is illustrated with case studies from Asia, Africa and Central and Latin America.

Download pdf or read book Trade and Aid written by Burton I. Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 1982-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982. Trade and Aid outlines the transition of U.S. foreign policy during the Eisenhower administration. In the years leading up to Eisenhower's election, America's predominant foreign economic program was based on the concept of "trade not aid," which deemphasized foreign aid and relied instead on liberalized world trade and the encouragement of private foreign investment to assure world economic growth. When Eisenhower took office in 1953, he embraced this doctrine. However, as problems in the Third World worsened, it became clear to Eisenhower and other architects of American foreign policy that trade and private investment were insufficient solutions to the economic woes of developing nations. In 1954 Eisenhower began to embrace economic aid as a core axis of his foreign economic policy. Burton I. Kaufman contextualizes Eisenhower's foreign policy leadership in the ongoing historical evaluation of Eisenhower's leadership prowess. He evaluates the outcomes of the Eisenhower administration's trade and aid program, arguing that developing countries were worse off by the time Eisenhower left office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this compilation contains articles that highlight the main challenges to the structure of global governance, trade, and development. They are based on empirical analysis resulting from my own professional experience with both the United Nations’ system and trade negotiations. They show the challenges that multilateral regimes face in maintaining their relevance. The second part of this compilation contains reflections on how the financial crisis has affected Europe and, what I believe, are the links with educational systems that have not been adapted to the new realities of the globalized world economy. Europe is stuck in fear and, therefore, does not manage to mobilize its creative potential to develop innovative solutions for youth and entrepreneurs. It looks at “what it used to be” rather than at “what it is to be” in the future. Education and training methodologies must be adapted to the new economic realities to encourage young people to think creatively and innovate.

Book excerpt: International Crimes: Theories Practice and Evolution is unique in that it proposes a theory of international criminal law by questioning the law itself. The analysis focuses on particular definitional aspects of international crimes in order to highlight their similarities as well as the defects of the relevant instruments and to ultimately stress the need for change and the feasibility of such a proposal. The recurring theme of the book is the idea that international criminal law is not, and should not be considered, as a static legal corpus. Rather, it should be acknowledged that the different crimes it covers interact greatly and could, and should, influence one another in order to reinforce, or enforce, the implementation and effectiveness of international criminal law. By exploring methods of improvement of international criminal law, this book addresses both theoretical issues as well as practical matters and, in that respect, will be of interest to both academics and practitioners.
