Book excerpt: The 7th International Workshop in Analysis and its Applications (IWAA) was held at the University of Maine, June 1-6, 1997 and featured approxi mately 60 mathematicians. The principal theme of the workshop shares the title of this volume and the latter is a direct outgrowth of the workshop. IWAA was founded in 1984 by Professor Caslav V. Stanojevic. The first meeting was held in the resort complex Kupuri, Yugoslavia, June 1-10, 1986, with two pilot meetings preceding. The Organization Committee to gether with the Advisory Committee (R. P. Boas, R. R. Goldberg, J. P. Kahne) set forward the format and content of future meetings. A certain number of papers were presented that later appeared individually in such journals as the Proceedings of the AMS, Bulletin of the AMS, Mathematis chen Annalen, and the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and its Applica tions. The second meeting took place June 1-10, 1987, at the same location. At the plenary session of this meeting it was decided that future meetings should have a principal theme. The theme for the third meeting (June 1- 10, 1989, Kupuri) was Karamata's Regular Variation. The principal theme for the fourth meeting (June 1-10, 1990, Kupuri) was Inner Product and Convexity Structures in Analysis, Mathematical Physics, and Economics. The fifth meeting was to have had the theme, Analysis and Foundations, organized in cooperation with Professor A. Blass (June 1-10, 1991, Kupuri).

This book was released on 2010-03-20 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This self-contained textbook gives a thorough exposition of multivariable calculus. The emphasis is on correlating general concepts and results of multivariable calculus with their counterparts in one-variable calculus. Further, the book includes genuine analogues of basic results in one-variable calculus, such as the mean value theorem and the fundamental theorem of calculus. This book is distinguished from others on the subject: it examines topics not typically covered, such as monotonicity, bimonotonicity, and convexity, together with their relation to partial differentiation, cubature rules for approximate evaluation of double integrals, and conditional as well as unconditional convergence of double series and improper double integrals. Each chapter contains detailed proofs of relevant results, along with numerous examples and a wide collection of exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, making the book useful to undergraduate and graduate students alike.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop took place from 29 May to I June 2000 in the picturesque Hungarian town of Pecs, 220 km south of Budapest. The main goal of the workshop was to review and promote experimental and theoretical research on the problem of Kondo-type scatteringofthe electrons in systems ofreduced dimensionalities. 53 regular participants and 7 observers from 17 different countries attended the workshop. The Kondo effect has been a topic ofintense interest for many years, due in part to its relevance to a variety of other branches of condensed matter physics. In addition to the best known example of magnetic impurities in noble metals, the physics of the Kondo effect is important in many areas of current research, including heavy-fermion physics, correlated electron systems, and high-temperature superconductivity. Of central importance in this problem is the interaction of conduction electrons in the metal with individual magnetic impurities, an interaction which also mediates the interaction ofthe impurities with each other.

Download pdf or read book The Many-body Problem written by Daniel Charles Mattis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book differs from its predecessor, Lieb & Mattis Mathematical Physics in One Dimension, in a number of important ways. Classic discoveries which once had to be omitted owing to lack of space ? such as the seminal paper by Fermi, Pasta and Ulam on lack of ergodicity of the linear chain, or Bethe's original paper on the Bethe ansatz ? can now be incorporated. Many applications which did not even exist in 1966 (some of which were originally spawned by the publication of Lieb & Mattis) are newly included. Among these, this new book contains critical surveys of a number of important developments: the exact solution of the Hubbard model, the concept of spinons, the Haldane gap in magnetic spin-one chains, bosonization and fermionization, solitions and the approach to thermodynamic equilibrium, quantum statistical mechanics, localization of normal modes and eigenstates in disordered chains, and a number of other contemporary concerns.

Download pdf or read book Pathology written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology: Oxidative Stress and Dietary Antioxidants bridges the disciplinary knowledge gap to help advance medical sciences and provide preventative and treatment strategies for pathologists, health care workers, food scientists and nutritionists who have divergent skills. This is important as oxidative stress can be ameliorated with pharmacological, nutraceutical or natural agents. While pathologists and clinical workers understand the processes in disease, they are less conversant in the science of nutrition and dietetics. Conversely, nutritionists and dietitians are less conversant with the detailed clinical background and science of pathology. This book helps to fill those gaps. Saves clinicians and researchers time by helping them to quickly access the very latest details on a broad range of pathologies and oxidation issues Combines the science of oxidative stress and the putative therapeutic usage of natural antioxidants in the diet Includes preclinical, clinical and population studies to help pathologists, nutritionists, dieticians, and clinicians map out key areas for research and further clinical recommendations
