Book excerpt: 'Impossible to put down ... This is a book about coming out of hell, about great evil, about the triumph of the human spirit, and about the great goodness on the part of those who helped. One is left with hope, and admiration' Julia Neuberger, THE TIMES 'A story of human resilience, fortitude and victory that restores the readers' hope for mankind' SUNDAY TIMES 'This is the story of human beings sucked into a vortex of destruction in which family, identity, religion and culture were all ripped away. A sense of near-miraculous calm descends when the Boys finally arrive in Britain, when human fortitude finally prevails over absolute evil' David Cesarani, TLS In August 1945, the first of 732 child survivors of the Holocaust reached Britain. First settled in the Lake District, they formed a tightly knit group of friends whose terrible shared experience is almost beyond imagining. This is their story, which begins in the lost communities of pre-World War II central Europe, moves through ghetto, concentration camp and death march, to liberation, survival, and finally, fifty years later, a deeply moving reunion. Martin Gilbert has brought together the recollections of this remarkable group of survivors to tell their astonishing stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many experts recognize that juvenile literature acts as an excellent reflector of the dominant ideas of an age; the values and fantasies of adult authors are often dressed up in fictional garb for youthful consumption. This collection examines a portion of the mass-produced juvenile literature, from the mid-19th century until the 1950s, focusing on the cluster of ideas connected with Britain's role in the maintenance of order and the spread of civilization. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The undergraduate years are a special time of life for many students. They are a time for study, yes, but also a time for making independent decisions over what to do beyond formal education. This book is based on a nine-year study of collegiate a cappella - a socio-musical practice that has exploded on college campuses since the 1990s. A defining feature of collegiate a cappella is that it is a student-run leisure activity undertaken by undergraduate students at institutions both large and small, prestigious and lower-status. With rare exceptions, participants are not music majors yet many participants interviewed had previous musical experience both in and out of school settings. Motivations for staying musically involved varied considerably - from those who felt they could not imagine life without a musical outlet to those who joined on a whim. Collegiate a cappella is about much more than singing cover songs. It sustains multiple forms of inequality through its audition practices and its performative enactment of gender and heteronormativity. This book sheds light on how undergraduates conceptualize vocation and avocation within the context of formal education, holding implications for educators at all levels.

Summary Book Review Adolescent Literacies and the Gendered Self by Barbara J. Guzzetti:

Download pdf or read book Adolescent Literacies and the Gendered Self written by Barbara J. Guzzetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s youth live in the interface of the local and the global. Research is documenting how a world youth culture is developing, how global migration is impacting youth, how global capitalism is changing their economic and vocational futures, and how computer-mediated communication with the world is changing the literacy needs and identities of students. This book explores the dynamic range of literacy practices that are reconstructing gender identities in both empowering and disempowering ways and the implications for local literacy classrooms. As gendered identities become less essentialist, are more often created in virtual settings, and are increasingly globalized, literacy educators need to understand these changes in order to effectively educate their students. The volume is organized around three themes: gender influences and identities in literacy and literature; gender influences and identities in new literacies practices; and gender and literacy issues and policies. The contributing authors, from North America, Europe, and Australia offer an international perspective on literacy issues and practices. This volume is an important contribution to understanding the impact of the local and the global on how today’s youth are represented and positioned in literacy practices and polices within the context of 21st century global/cosmopolitan life.
