Book excerpt: This book examines the complex and conflicting relationships between LGBT people and our cultural and heritage organisations including libraries, museums and archives. In this unique book established author John Vincent draws together current good practice, and also highlights issues which urgently still need to be addressed. To set the work of libraries, museums and archives in context, Vincent traces the development of LGBT rights in the UK. He goes on to examine some of the reasons for hostility and hatred against this minority group and critically explores provision that has been made by cultural and heritage organisations. He offers examples of good practice - not only from the UK, but from across the world - and draws up an essential 'charter' for future development. This compelling, practical book should be read by managers and staff in libraries, museums and archives around the world looking for guidance on this important issue.

Download pdf or read book Homosexuality and Science written by Vernon A. Rosario and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 2002 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Homosexuality and Science" is the compelling history of this intense, ongoing scientific controversy. The story begins in the Victorian era, when doctors were horrified to discover that homosexuality, which they called "sexual perversion" was widespread--probably the result of childhood masturbation, they theorized, and sure to result in mental weakness and blindness for generations to come. The story progresses to a world where gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual scientists are involved in sexuality research, but where the AIDS pandemic has given rise to "reparative therapy" and ministries that claim to "cure" homosexuality. This high-interest title shows how our understanding of homosexuality has been shaped not only by theories of evolution, eugenics, endocrinology, neurobiology, molecular biology, psychology, genetics, anthropology, and sexology, but also by the values of the times.

Book excerpt: Herman Schmalenbach (1885-1950), a friend of Husserl and a scholarly critic of Tönnies and Weber, carried on the tradition of Georg Simmel and ranks as one of the most important representatives of phenomenological society. However, because of historical and political circumstances, Schmalenbach's writings have received little attention either in his native Germany or abroad. Now Günther Lüschen and Gregory P. Stone have provided the first English translations of some of Schmalenbach's most important works. In their introductory essay to this collection, the editors appraise Schmalenbach as scholar, philosopher, and sociologist.

Summary Book Review Continuity and Change by Rita James Simon:

Download pdf or read book Continuity and Change written by Rita James Simon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978-07-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed 1978 study, Professor Rita J. Simon examines two significant ethnic communities in Israel: one of ultra-Orthodox Jews, and the other of Israeli Arabs. The Jews form a tiny but cohesive group with a strong sense of pride in their heritage and values. The Arabs, who comprise thirteen percent of the total population of Israel, occupy a politically and culturally sensitive position within that state. The author argues that despite these and obvious other cultural differences the two communities are akin in their separateness from the mainstream of Israeli society. She presents explanations of how and why both groups maintain cultural values and social patterns that prevent their assimilation into and acceptance by the broader society. Continuity and Change is significant as a study of contemporary social conditions in Israel, of sources of conflict within that society, as of implications that these conflicts have for the future.
