Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though a dystopian novel hovering over the imminent collapse of American civilization at the hands of a techno-authoritarian state, "Love in the Time of the Apocalypse" is also a book about the triumph of love and humor over the fatal gravitas of life and death. It is part future nightmare part whimsical farce of the present. Love in the Time of the Apocalypse is a work of playful conspiritorial pop-delirium and pastiche full of lovable terrorists, state run breeding houses, Amish casinos, vulgar action scenes, the antichrist, tongue and cheek hyper-masculinity ("perhaps sit-ups can save the world") and a bourgeois love story to top it all. Readers who love Science Fiction, Dystopian Literature, and Conspiracy Theory will find this book chock full of fresh and clever fare. The speculative details are much more subtle than works on the post-apocalypse. The reader can feel both drawn into a bit of a future shock while at the same time remain anchored in a familiar, albeit, terrifying present. Blecha has a way of pulling from current trends of government suppression of freedoms and stretching them ever so softly to their possible conclusion. Thus, rather than a world of utter totalitarianism such at Orwell's 1984, we are presented with a more plausible, more friendly fascism that a society founded on consumerism and entertainment might bring about. Without coming across as a writer with an agenda, Gregory Blecha offers a strong but playful critique of State power, the smothering inefficiency and corruption of bureaucracy, and the role of the over-stimulated, under-critical herd of middle class consumers and middle managers of a collapsing North America. Tramps, plague victims, nihilists and nymphomaniacs along with the main character, a WASP drawn into their exciting world, make for the heroes of the story. The villains are the lifeless and systematic processes of the Federal Government, the Department of Health, the Department of Overpopulation, and the technological control systems of modern life, and yet even these are rendered with an air of playfulness that allows the reader to smile as the world comes crumbling down.

"I've always been so repelled by the prospect of love and death, both of which I regard to be inherently mortal afflictions that must plague mankind." The clock is ticking to create a cure for the virus that currently grips the world. But as the deadline approaches a key mission is sabotaged and Mira Iliev, a government scientist, finds herself unwittingly allied with the most hated man in Eastern Europe. Demir Gudelj turns himself in after a very successful career as an international Drug Lord. But when his meticulously planned contract with the government goes awry, he finds not only his promised, full pardon, at risk but also his lifelong beliefs. What follows will test Demir's wits, his will to survive, and his heart. "Mira wonders if she could love Demir like she does if they were both on the same side. In the meantime, the war continues, and part of her is glad. Maybe he'd been correct? Maybe survival in times like these required more than peacetime morals? Maybe the meek did not have what it took to inherit the earth." A story of corruption, repentance, and forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This writing was left unpublished at Swedenborg's death, although it had apparently been carefully prepared for publication. Except towards the end it is almost exclusively an exposition of the spiritual sense of Scripture. Not only is every phrase in the Apocalypse (as far as covered) separately explained, but thousands of passages, gathered from all parts of the Word, are quoted and expounded. These expositions close with the tenth verse of the nineteenth chapter. Towards the end extended doctrinal discussions are introduced. Both for its exposition of passages of Scripture and for its doctrinal statements this is an exceedingly important and valuable work. It is especially instructive in its expositions of the Psalms, the Prophets, and the Gospels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex is cheap. Coupled sexual activity has become more widely available than ever. Cheap sex has been made possible by two technologies that have little to do with each other - the Pill and high-quality pornography - and its distribution made more efficient by a third technological innovation, online dating. Together, they drive down the cost of real sex, and in turn slow the development of love, make fidelity more challenging, sexual malleability more common, and have even taken a toll on men's marriageability. Cheap Sex takes readers on an extended tour inside the American mating market, and highlights key patterns that characterize young adults' experience today, including the timing of first sex in relationships, overlapping partners, frustrating returns on their relational investments, and a failure to link future goals like marriage with how they navigate their current relationships. Drawing upon several large nationally-representative surveys, in-person interviews with 100 men and women, and the assertions of scholars ranging from evolutionary psychologists to gender theorists, what emerges is a story about social change, technological breakthroughs, and unintended consequences. Men and women have not fundamentally changed, but their unions have. No longer playing a supporting role in relationships, sex has emerged as a central priority in relationship development and continuation. But unravel the layers, and it is obvious that the emergence of "industrial sex" is far more a reflection of men's interests than women's.

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Handbook of Holocaust Literature and Culture reflects current approaches to Holocaust literature that open up future thinking on Holocaust representation. The chapters consider diverse generational perspectives—survivor writing, second and third generation—and genres—memoirs, poetry, novels, graphic narratives, films, video-testimonies, and other forms of literary and cultural expression. In turn, these perspectives create interactions among generations, genres, temporalities, and cultural contexts. The volume also participates in the ongoing project of responding to and talking through moments of rupture and incompletion that represent an opportunity to contribute to the making of meaning through the continuation of narratives of the past. As such, the chapters in this volume pose options for reading Holocaust texts, offering openings for further discussion and exploration. The inquiring body of interpretive scholarship responding to the Shoah becomes itself a story, a narrative that materially extends our inquiry into that history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to the vast nuclear infrastructure and the apocalypses it produces, focusing on Black, queer, Indigenous, and Asian American literatures Since 1945, America has spent more resources on nuclear technology than any other national project. Although it requires a massive infrastructure that touches society on myriad levels, nuclear technology has typically been discussed in a limited, top-down fashion that clusters around powerful men. In Infrastructures of Apocalypse, Jessica Hurley turns this conventional wisdom on its head, offering a new approach that focuses on neglected authors and Black, queer, Indigenous, and Asian American perspectives. Exchanging the usual white, male “nuclear canon” for authors that include James Baldwin, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Ruth Ozeki, Infrastructures of Apocalypse delivers a fresh literary history of post-1945 America that focuses on apocalypse from below. Here Hurley critiques the racialized urban spaces of civil defense and reads nuclear waste as a colonial weapon. Uniting these diverse lines of inquiry is Hurley’s belief that apocalyptic thinking is not the opposite of engagement but rather a productive way of imagining radically new forms of engagement. Infrastructures of Apocalypse offers futurelessness as a place from which we can construct a livable world. It fills a blind spot in scholarship on American literature of the nuclear age, while also offering provocative, surprising new readings of such well-known works as Atlas Shrugged, Infinite Jest, and Angels in America. Infrastructures of Apocalypse is a revelation for readers interested in nuclear issues, decolonial literature, speculative fiction, and American studies.

Book excerpt: When the sky is ripped by a commanding voice with the grim verdict, that the Intergalactic Affairs Committee has declared the Earth unsalvageable and a danger to the universe, people shudder, shake and fall to their knees in prayer. But not Perry Brambles, a cynical, opinionated journalist who is desperately trying to finish his copy for the morning news and can't really be bothered by some 'blithering pain in the ass omnipotent being from another galaxy, universe, dimension, or what-have-you.' After voicing his comments, rather descriptively, he's whisked away to another planet and tasked with guiding Earth's cumulative leadership to a better understanding of their duties with hopes of saving the world from this damning decree. And it will be here in space, and time and even space-time that Perry will regain his youth and favourite sweater. He'll learn the truth about nature, and human nature, and all nature, really, and how, at the end of the day, what truly matters are peace, happiness, acceptance, children, love, and.... dusting.

Book excerpt: This first anthology of Apocalyptic or neoromantic poetry since the 1940s includes over 200 poets, many well known (Dylan Thomas, W.S. Graham, Ted Hughes), and others quite forgotten (Ernest Frost, Paul Potts). Over forty of the poets are women, of whom Edith Sitwell and Lynette Roberts are among the most exuberant. Much of the contents has never previously been anthologised; many poems are reprinted for the first time since the 1940s. The poetry of the Second World War appears in a new context, as do early poems by Philip Larkin, Denise Levertov and Geoffrey Hill. Here, readers can enjoy an overview of the visionary modernist British and Irish poetry of the mid-century, its antecedents and its aftermath. As a period style and as a body of work, Apocalyptic poetry will come as a revelation to most readers.
