Summary Book Review Head Games by Nikitah Imani:

Download pdf or read book Head Games written by Nikitah Imani and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Head Games is focused on the way in which ethnocentrism and cultural bias can impact public health, and in this case, psychotherapeutic process. It examines a family therapy program being run by a major public university, tied to the criminal justice system and the educational establishment, aiming to reform perceived "dysfunctionality" in homes of the "patients (subjects)." What follows is a tragic comedy of errors in which theory and practice normed in one sociocultural context is applied, or more appropriately, misapplied. This book questions whether we have come as far as we think in the US in terms of calibrating our mental health systems for multicultural sensitivity and perhaps suggests there are limits to how much we can engage in cross-cultural therapy. The book uses an Africa-centered theoretical framework to tease out these systemic incongruities and will hopefully provide guidance for counselors, researchers, and those more generally interested in programmatic evaluation research across cultural lines. The title, Head Games, is an apt metaphor for the manipulation of the program by all of its participants for the purpose of reifying or resisting its inherent definitions of abnormality.

Book excerpt: She's seen it all, until…Head Games, a Medical Thriller from Eileen Dreyer —2004 - St. Louis, Missouri— St. Louis death investigator and trauma nurse Molly Burke has seen just about everything until gifts begin showing up on her doorstep—gifts like human eyes and painted bones—the signature of a twisted serial killer. Complicating the dangerous situation, Molly's 16-year-old nephew unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep, with problems of his own. Now, Molly must balance the investigation into the mind of a monster, who's taking her back to the worst years of her life, while launching a rescue mission for her nephew. The question is, will she survive either? Publisher's Note: No one writes medical thrillers better than former Trauma Nurse, Eileen Dreyer. This tight medical thriller contains profanity consistent with the salty speech of crime investigators and does NOT contain sexual content. "A tensely plotted thriller that compels the reader to the last shocking page…Dreyer deftly displays her droll sense of humor while spinning a tale of taut terror…complex, riveting, funny, and compelling." ~The Denver Post "Nearly flawless. The dialogue is witty, yet shot through with verisimilitude. The insights into hospitals, medical examiners' offices, police departments, and the military are stunning." ~St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Book excerpt: In this graphic novel adaptation of the Edgar-nominated novel Head Games, Craig McDonald blends history and legend to tell the tale of the classic hard-drinking, hard-living, and hard-boiled protagonist. Artist Kevin Singles brings this noir thriller to life with a style reminiscent of the golden age of dime-store paperbacks. It’s 1957, and aging novelist Hector Lassiter thought that his adventures were long behind him. But then he receives a treasure worth killing for: the skull of Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. With his partners in crime, brooding poet Bud Fiske and hard-as-nails beauty Alicia Vicente, Hector must make a mad dash across the American southwest. If the trio can survive long enough to sell the skull to the highest bidder, they'll score big. But in the meantime, Hector must dodge bullets from deranged fraternity members, aging soldiers of fortune, vicious warlords, and crooked feds.

Dr MacLennan's book covers the entire subject from basic skills to designing and implementing a tailor-made coaching and mentoring system. He starts by explaining the nature of achievement and the factors that determine it, and then introduces a seven-stage model that will enable managers and supervisors to encourage their people to develop their skills. He examines the problems commonly encountered and shows how to overcome them or, in some cases, turn them to positive account. The book is interactive throughout, using cartoons, humour, self-assessment questions, case studies and illustrations to reinforce the text. A particularly valuable feature is a set of checklists that together summarize the key elements involved. Coaching and Mentoring is, quite simply, a comprehensive manual of the best methods known today of helping people to succeed.
