Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Last Things Donald G. Bloesch takes up difficult and sometimes controversial themes such as the coming of the kingdom of God, the return of Jesus Christ, the life hereafter, the millennial hope, the final judgment, hell, heaven, purgatory and paradise. Wrestling with biblical texts that often take metaphorical form, Bloesch avoids rationalistic reductionism as well as timid agnosticism. While he acknowledges mystery and even paradox, Bloesch finds biblical revelation much more than sufficient to illuminate the central truths of a Christian hope articulated throughout the history of the church. The Last Things is not just a review of past Christian eschatology but a fresh articulation of the grace and glory of God yet to be consummated. The triumph of the grace of Jesus Christ and the dawning of hope beckon us to reach out in the power of the Spirit to receive that blessed future and the promise to renew the life of the church universal today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divorce is rampant in the world and in the Church. The World Health Organization has named "swine flu" a pandemic because of its rapid spread around the world. Divorce, because of its rapid and out of control growth in the Church should be viewed as a Christian pandemic. Divorce and Remarriage looks at three areas, the problem, the solution and how to get to the solution. Divorce in the Christian church is a result of secular thinking and a biblical ignorance. The Bible is full of illustrations of marital strife and its affects on family, children and associates. The solution is simple; the Bible also gives explicit instructions and illustrations to the Christian so they can have a meaningful and fulfilling relationship. The last step is the hardest; how to arrive at the solution. Divorce and Remarriage is not a self help book. Christians cannot help themselves. Jesus said he would send a helper; the Holy Spirit. Therein lies the solution. In the power of the Holy Spirit we find the solution; a transformed life. Divorce and Remarriage is a call to Christians to take responsibility for their actions, submit themselves under the authority of Scripture and find fulfillment in their next and last marriage. Bill became a Christian while going through his second divorce. He is a graduate of Word Of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, New York. He has a bachelor of Arts degree is Church Education from Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, Alabama. He is currently living with his wife in Sarasota, Florida.

The characters, names, events, and places of the Old Testament took on new significance with the newly formed political state; vast portions of the text became difficult. Stalder asks how Palestinian Christians have read the Old Testament in the period before and under the British Mandate and in light of the foundation of the modern State of Israel, outlining a future hermeneutic that respects religious communities without writing off the Old Testament prematurely.

Summary Book Review Will Catholics Be Left Behind by Carl Olson:

Download pdf or read book Will Catholics Be Left Behind written by Carl Olson and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and timely book, written by a former Fundamentalist, is a thorough critique of the popular Fundamentalist notion of the “Rapture”—the belief that Christians will be removed from earth prior to a time of Tribulation and the Second Coming. It examines the theological, historical, and Biblical basis for “premillennial dispensationalism”, the belief system based around the Rapture, and popularized in the best-selling Left Behind books and taught by “Bible prophecy” writers Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, and many others. Written for both the lay person and the serious student, this book combines an engaging, popular approach with detailed footnotes and exhaustive research. Beginning with the big picture, it focuses first on key concepts such as eschatology, the Parousia, and the relationship between the Kingdom and the Church. It then examines the Book of Revelation, providing insights into the nature and purpose of that difficult, final book of the Bible. Another chapter looks at the concept of the “millennium” and how it has been understood by various Christians over the centuries. Olson then shows how Left Behind creator LaHaye’s many works on “Bible prophecy” are filled with attacks on Catholicism, and often rely on sensationalism, shaky scholarship, and subjective interpretations of Scripture Olson, a former dispensationalist who now edits Envoy magazine, also presents a history of apocalyptic belief and theology, beginning with the Early Church Fathers and including the Montanists, St. Augustine, Joachim of Fiore, the Protestant Reformers, and the American Puritans. He shows how John Nelson Darby, an ex-Anglican priest, developed the premillennial dispensationalist system, which hinges on the Rapture, in the 1830s and how Darby relied upon faulty assumptions about Jesus Christ, the Church, and the Bible. The second part of the book, “A Catholic Critique of Dispensationalism,” focuses on three important topics: the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the Kingdom; the interpretation of Scripture; and the nature of the Rapture event. Filled with a wealth of information drawn from both Protestant and Catholic sources, this section provides a complete rebuttal to the premillennial dispensationalist system and the “left behind” theology. The book concludes with a reflection on the Catholic understanding of the end times, salvation history, and the final judgement. Glossaries of key persons and terms are also included. A strong, but fair, critique of a dangerous and popular belief, Will Catholics Be “Left Behind”? provides Catholics and Protestants, lay people and clergy, and students and scholars with important answers and information about the roots and meaning of the “Rapture”.

Five Views on Sanctification brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification. Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine, and responds as well to the views of the other authors. This book addresses such practical questions as: How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal---or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified? The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. Counterpoints books address two categories: Church Life and Bible and Theology. Complete your library with other books in the Counterpoints series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of the Christ is a clear, biblical reply to the question of what a person must believe about Jesus Christ to possess eternal life. While Christianity has historically maintained that faith in Jesus Christ is essential for everlasting life, this raises the vital question: what is the necessary content of this faith? Written against the backdrop of the controversy within Free Grace circles over the "crossless gospel" and the contents of saving faith, Thomas Stegall goes well beyond a carefully documented analysis of his own movement. The Gospel of the Christ provides a systematic, exegetically-based treatment of biblical teaching on the subject of "the gospel" and the meaning of the title, "the Christ." The end result is a comprehensive biblical and theological study of Jesus Christ's person and work in the contents of saving faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man walks along a road leading to the Sea of Galilee. Messiahs were plentiful in the first century. In Judaism, the idea of Messiah referred to “a king appointed by the Almighty.” After the Hasmonean kingdom in the first century and the Roman-Jewish wars in the first two centuries, the idea of a Messiah expanded. The Messiah was considered to be “the individual who would deliver the Jewish people from the Roman Empire,” thus ushering in the golden age of Messiah. Now here comes another. A leader of a Jewish sect was crucified, and there were those who claimed he rose from the grave. It does sound a little preposterous. Messiahs could fill volumes with their plans and heroics, but the obvious questions are, Where are they now? Where are their followers? A man who gathers twelve apparent misfits of society and leads them while he teaches, heals, delivers evil spirits, and raises some from the dead is certainly unique. Is he one of the many self-proclaimed Messiahs, or is he different? The faith that this man founded today represents nearly one-third of the world’s population. The Beginning details how this movement started. From a small group called The Way to the conversion of a vitriolic Pharisee to meetings with well-known political activists the story begins. So snuggle up; get a nice, warm drink; and follow The Beginning—the early story of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you been wondering as a Christian, or non-Christian, what many think -- and expect -- will happen in the "last days" or "end times" with all the talk and focus in the headlines -- and some churches -- about our future? And with all the events taking place in the Middle East, especially Israel? And Iran? Are you confused because of various end-time scenarios and conflicting opinions promoted through popular books on prophecy, the Left Behind series, televangelists, preachers, and others speaking of a great tribulation, rapture, Armageddon, Apocalypse, the destruction of the earth, a new heaven and earth, a second coming, and a millennium? There has been an overload of teaching and information about these things over the last century -- however sincere and cloaked in good intentions -- yet with long-held and deep-seated traditions and doctrines, all borne of a lack of accurate knowledge (particularly the Hebrew and Greek) and information based on compelling evidence. Would you like to know what the Bible actually says about all these issues? For God's Word itself -- "Let Scripture Interpret Scripture" -- and the Holy Spirit are the only necessary interpreters. The Last Days Are Left Behind will challenge your thinking, help to erase the confusion, and provide clarity regarding the present-day purpose of God. Author James Ellis demonstrates end-time truth based logically on solid evidence after a linguistically accurate, biblically consistent, and intellectually honest examination of the Bible's prophetic passages and verses, the original languages -- Hebrew and Greek, the social, cultural, and historical context of Scripture, and the relevance of the audience spoken or written to in God's Word.

Why not introduce Him as the promised heir to the throne of King David? Why is a crimson path essential for the plan of redemption? This book will answer these questions and take the reader on a journey through the ages. This journey will reveal the foreshadows that foretell the redemptive mission of the Lamb of God. In this exposition, the foreshadows recorded in the Old Testament will be identified and the resemblance of each foreshadow will be correlated with the plan of fulfillment recorded in the New Testament.

Summary Book Review The Pretribulation Rapture Doctrine and the Progressive Dispensational System by John A. Alifano:

Download pdf or read book The Pretribulation Rapture Doctrine and the Progressive Dispensational System written by John A. Alifano and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in the early nineteenth century, the basic tenet of dispensationalism (a school of Protestant theology which holds that God deals with humankind in different ways in different periods of time called dispensations) has been that the church and Israel are two sharply distinct peoples of God. The distinction is theological in nature; specifically, anthropological (pertaining to humanity), soteriological (pertaining to salvation), and eschatological (pertaining to last things). The tenet of theological distinctiveness has always been the cornerstone for the dispensationalist's belief in the pretribulation rapture of the church: the belief that at the first stage of Christ's two-stage second advent he will endue all who comprise the true church with a resurrected body like his own, and transport; i.e., rapture, all to heaven before the seven year period of turmoil known as the Tribulation begins on earth. The rapture marks the end of one dispensation when God focused his attention primarily on the church, and the start of another when God will focus his attention primarily on Israel. Today, almost two centuries later, progressive dispensationalists have rejected the view of a sharp theological distinction. From their study of Scripture they observe a soft non-theological distinction. They describe the church and Israel as different redemptive dimensions of the same humanity that share in a holistic and unified eternal salvation. An already and not yet eschatological framework is the cornerstone of their system. This thesis will argue that progressive dispensationalism cannot integrate the pretribulation rapture doctrine into its reconstructed dispensational system on any basis of theological distinctiveness between the church and Israel. This will be accomplished by first setting forth the theological systems of the three major forms of dispensationalism that have existed during its history, namely, classical, revised, and progressive dispensationalism, and second, by showing that each of three kinds of theological distinctiveness, namely, anthropological, soteriological, and eschatological distinctiveness, are present in the classical and revised systems and therefore these systems can support the rapture's integration, but are not present in the progressive system and therefore this system cannot support the rapture's integration. The thesis closes with an explanation as to why progressive dispensationalism is more compatible with amillennialism than with premillennialism.
